Street markets in Madrid

Madrid has a wide range of stores scattered throughout each of its neighborhoods, but undoubtedly an alternative to the classic shopping is to stroll around the street markets in Madrid.

El Rastro

El Rastro is one of the emblematic symbols of the city, although it must be said that it has lived better times. There were other times when the stalls belonged to artisans or antique dealers, who would undo their own houses to put them on sale. Today there are still some of them, but there is now a lot of pure and simple commerce. The appointment with El Rastro is every Sunday and holidays from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm.

Early in the morning, traders arrive to set up their stalls. The police check that all are regulated, and of course pay their taxes to the City Council. Between 9.00 and 10.00 a.m. the early risers arrive, they look for bargains or specific objects, such as something that has been stolen in the hope of finding it. Also those who like the quieter Rastro, without the hustle and bustle and the rivers of people that arrive from 12.00.

El Rastro is scattered over a few streets around the Ribera de Curtidoresand that go all the way to the Ronda de Toledo. Different things, spread over different areas:

• The street Ribera de Curtidores is mainly craft stalls, jeans, new, handmade clothes, etc.
• The General Vara del Rey Square has a lot of second hand clothes, leather jackets, used Levi's, or corduroy jackets from the socialist era. There are also some interesting stalls of furniture and other second-hand items.
• More antiques on the street Rhodes and in the Piquer Galleriesin Ribera de Curtidores.
• At Carlos Arniches y Look at the Baja RiverThe most important of all are the records, second-hand clothes at Marmota and impossible objects at the Transformista.
• In the esplanada del Campillotools, tools, fabrics and furs by the meter or by pieces, records, and magazines. A little bit of everything. The stalls get longer and longer until almost reaching the Glorieta de Embajadores.

We do not recommend the circular bus on a Sunday of Rastro because it is full to the brim and there is always a traffic jam in this area. But anyway we do recommend a visit to this market, being careful with backpacks or bags to avoid unpleasantness, and stopping for a few beers in any of the many bars you will find.

Cuesta de Moyano (Books)
